Food prices are spiraling out of control, with global food prices soaring 75 percent between 2005 and 2007. The stability of the world’s economy and governments is greatly threatened by this emerging trend, as riots over food prices have already broken out in several countries.

 

Biotechnology is revolutionizing the food chain in a way that will affect millions of people globally as it has the potential to provide plentiful, nutritious, and novel food for the world's growing population. The impacts on the food industry’s structure and economy could be extensive. This section will focus on in-vitro meat and genetically-modified food.
